THE DAVID MAXEY
PRINT COLLECTION
34 A4 sized, pencil drawings for you to print, mount and frame

ARTIST'S BACKGROUND NOTES:

Blame it on eBay . . . This collection of pencil drawings is best-described as 'long-forgotten'. To be honest, I'd forgotten about them myself after twenty years, until a friend asked "Whatever happened to ...?" and suggested they might fetch a few pounds on the auction site.

The drawings were one of a number of railway-related items I produced in the 1980s and they   started when I bashed off a half-hour sketch of a Class 40 in a moment of boredom.
"What do you think? I asked proudly." "Terrible," says girlfriend of the time (though not for much longer). "You can't do serious artwork in thirty minutes. Michelangelo took thirty years to paint the Sistine Chapel." "Yes, but not continuously." So I took more care and I took my time. By the end, each drawing was soaking up around fifty hours and I realised I'd made a rod for my own back. I had    magazine articles to write and photographs to take, all of which produced instant cash for a fraction of the effort. So, they kind of stopped ... until the eBay thing came up and I realised people still wanted to own them.

From memory, there were three distinct series; the first were all-diesel, roughly A4-size and released in batches of four. Then I went widescreen, with bigger originals to incorporate more detail (the Class 58 was the first, closely followed by D200). By then, I had hundreds of people collecting the whole set and the magazine advertising had brought in special commissions. The four Southern Region electrics were produced specially for the Southern Electric Group, the West Country Pacific for the owners of Swanage at the Mid-Hants Railway. That commission set me off on the steam route and a third series.

Coming up to date and the eBay thing, I've recently sharpened the pencils again and produced an HST power car in First Great Western colours ... and reminded myself what hard work it is. At the moment I don't plan to do any more, so you have the complete set on this CD. And my personal favourites (as if it matters)? D200 and the West Country - for reasons of nostalgia and general satisfaction with the completed drawings. Maybe I shouldn't have stopped.
