4 - East Germany

Number four in the Dying Embers series, looking back at the decline of steam across Europe, goes behind the Iron Curtain into the German Democratic Republic, better known as East Germany, between 1976 & 1980.

Starting in Berlin we visit all five regions of the country, taking in both main line action and some of the narrow-gauge systems. Numerous locations feature during the journey around the GDR.

Here’s just a flavour of what's included: Class 03 Pacifics & Class 52 2-10-0s on workings in and around Berlin; the 900mm gauge line at Bad Doberan and the 750mm line on the Isle of Rugen; Class 01s & 03s at Neubrandenburg; a Class 41 2-8-2 and a Class 50 at Magdeburg; action from the metre-gauge Harz system; a 58 and a Class 35 2-6-2 at Riesa; freight on the 750mm narrow gauge lines at Oschatz and on the Pressnitzalbahn; a Class 95 tank on freight at Lausche; a variety of locos in and around Saalfeld including Classes 01, 44, 65 and 95.
