THE CLASS 37/4 STORY

FOURS reviews the history of the Class 37/4 since its creation in 1985/86. Although the 31 locos featured heavily at first on the work for which they were created - passenger services in Scotland and Wales - changing traffic trends spead them across England, too, in later years, on both passenger and freight workings. It was appropriate, then, that the newly-formed English, Welsh & Scottish Railway should acquire them in 1995, opening up a further period of useful operation until the present day in 2009 and, perhaps, beyond.

Highlights include: ‘Early days’ shots in large logo blue in Scotland and Wales; 37421 on oil at Barnetby; pairs on the stone at Peak Forest; West Highland freight; ‘Club’ trains at Preston with departures by 37416, 418 & 426 plus 430 at Leyland, 407 at Salwick and a noisy departure from Poulton-le-Fylde by 425; a selection of 37/4s along the North Wales Coast, including 401, 408, 415, 417, 418, 420, 421, 426 & 429; 4s on the ‘Silver Bullet’; a Tower Colliery MGR with 37412 & 418; 422 & 425 leaving Margam with an mgr; a pair at Machen Quarry; the Fort William sleeper with 37401, 403, 405, 406, 421, 423 & 427; the Rhymneys with 403, 405, 408, 412, 415, 418, 419 & 425; charters, including 'The Royal Scotsman', Pathfinder trips and, of course, SRPS railtours; the S&C top & tail passenger turns for Arriva; the survivors out and about on freight workings in the past few years, including 401 & 417 towing steam loco Duke of Gloucester; the Vale of Glamorgan line re-opening specials with 411 & 425; 37408 rescuing a failed 66 at Barry Docks; DRS’s 423 with an observation saloon . . . and plenty more to bring the memories flooding back.
